History of the piece:
The Antique Dithridge Opaline Milk Glass Cherub Plate from the early 1900s is a fine example of the distinctive craftsmanship of the Dithridge & Company Glassworks, which was founded in 1862 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dithridge became known for their decorative glassware, especially opaline milk glass, a highly sought-after material during the Victorian and Edwardian periods.
Key Features:
Opaline Milk Glass: This style of glass is known for its translucent, milky-white appearance. Opaline glass often has a soft, ethereal glow when held up to the light. The type made by Dithridge was especially valued for its delicate, porcelain-like quality.
Cherub Motif: The cherub design on this plate represents a common theme in Victorian-era decorative arts, where cherubs symbolized innocence, beauty, and romance. Cherubs were popular in European art and made their way into American decorative items during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Dithridge & Company specialized in opaline and other types of decorative glass. The company was especially known for its work in pressed glass, where they produced intricate patterns and designs. Dithridge was a pioneer in producing a wide range of glass products, including household items like plates, lamps, and vases, which were not only functional but also served as ornamental pieces.
By the early 20th century, milk glass became widely popular in America, often used for kitchenware, lamps, and decorative objects. While many companies produced milk glass, Dithridge's work is recognized for its higher quality and more refined designs, such as the intricate cherub pattern seen on your plate.
