History of the piece:
Pyrex and Corning Glass Works: Corning Glass Works was founded in 1851 and became known for developing heat-resistant glass. Pyrex, introduced in 1915, became one of Corning’s most successful brands, offering oven-safe glassware that revolutionized home cooking. By the 1970s, Pyrex was a common feature in American homes, valued for its durability, resistance to heat, and multifunctionality.
Old Town Blue (Blue Onion) Pattern: The Old Town Blue pattern, also known as Blue Onion, was introduced in 1972 as part of Corelle’s “Livingware” line. The design, featuring a delicate blue floral and vine motif, was inspired by traditional blue and white porcelain patterns, such as Blue Onion and Delftware, which had been popular for centuries. The simple, clean design of Old Town Blue was well-suited to the minimalist aesthetics of the 1970s and quickly became one of Corelle’s most iconic patterns.
Gravy Boat and Underplate (Model 77-U): The 77-U model refers to the Pyrex Gravy Boat with Underplate, which was part of the Old Town Blue collection. This set was designed to complement Corelle dinnerware and provide a cohesive look on the dining table. The gravy boat was made of Pyrex glass, known for its heat resistance, allowing it to be used for serving hot gravies and sauces directly from the oven or stove. The underplate, often made from Corelle’s Vitrelle, added a functional and aesthetic touch, preventing drips and enhancing the presentation.
Design and Features
Old Town Blue Design: The Old Town Blue pattern features a classic blue floral motif that wraps around the body of the gravy boat and underplate. The design, which echoes the timeless appeal of blue and white porcelain, adds a decorative yet understated element to the table setting.
Heat-Resistant Pyrex: The gravy boat is made from Pyrex glass, which is known for its ability to withstand high temperatures. This made it practical for serving hot liquids, such as gravy or sauces, without concern for the glass breaking or cracking.
Underplate Functionality: The matching underplate served a dual purpose. It not only enhanced the visual appeal of the set but also helped catch any drips or spills, keeping the table clean and organized during meals.
